Is your business not showing on Google Maps?
You have a business. You have a physical location. You have customers. You may even have a Google Business Profile already set up.
But when someone searches for your business on Google Maps, you either can’t find it, or you have to search almost exactly for your business name before it appears.
That can be frustrating.
And if your business doesn’t appear when people search for the products or services you offer, you’re potentially missing customers who are already looking for what you sell.
The good news is that having a Google Business Profile is only the beginning. There are several reasons a business may have poor visibility on Google Maps, and most of them can be worked on.
Here are some of the most common ones.
1. Your Google Business Profile is not properly optimized

Creating a Google Business Profile doesn’t automatically mean Google will rank your business highly for every search related to your services.
Creating a Google Business Profile doesn’t automatically mean Google will rank your business highly for every search related to your services.
That includes important information such as your:
- Business name
- Primary category
- Additional categories
- Services
- Business description
- Address or service area
- Phone number
- Website
- Opening hours
- Photos
For example, if you run a massage spa in Abuja, simply putting the business name on Google isn’t enough.
Your profile should accurately communicate that you provide massage services and where you provide them.
The more complete and accurate your profile is, the easier it is for Google to understand your business.
2. You may be using the wrong primary category
Your primary category is one of the important signals that helps Google understand what your business is.
This is where many businesses make a mistake.
A business may choose a category because it sounds close to what they do, rather than choosing the category that most accurately represents their main service.
For example, a business that primarily provides massage services shouldn’t choose a completely unrelated category simply because it sounds similar.
Your primary category should represent the main thing your business does.
Additional categories can then be used where they genuinely apply.
Don’t select every category you can find just because you want to appear for more searches. The categories should accurately represent the business.
3. Your services haven’t been properly added
Another area businesses often overlook is the services section.
If your business provides several services, those services should be properly represented on your Google Business Profile.
For example, a digital marketing agency might provide:
- Search engine optimization
- Google Business Profile optimization
- Social media marketing
- Google Ads
- Website design
- Content marketing
These services help provide additional context about what the business actually offers.
This is particularly important for service-based businesses because customers aren’t always searching for the company name.
They may be searching for the service itself.
4. Your business may have very little activity or information
Think about your Google Business Profile from a customer’s point of view.
Would you trust a business profile that has one old photo, incomplete information and no recent updates?
Probably not.
A properly maintained profile gives potential customers more reasons to trust the business.
Regularly adding relevant photos, keeping information accurate, responding to reviews and keeping the profile updated can help create a much stronger presence.
This doesn’t mean you should post random content every day.
The goal is to keep the profile useful and relevant.
5. Your reviews matter
Reviews are important for both customers and businesses.
When someone is deciding between several businesses on Google, reviews can influence which business they choose.
But don’t make the mistake of buying fake reviews or asking people to leave reviews they haven’t earned.
The better approach is simple:
Do good work and make it easy for genuine customers to leave honest feedback.
You should also respond to reviews, including negative ones.
A professional response to a negative review can sometimes tell a potential customer more about your business than the review itself.
6. Your website and Google Business Profile should support each other
Your Google Business Profile shouldn’t exist completely separately from your website.
Your website should clearly explain:
- What you do
- Where you operate
- Who you serve
- What services you provide
- How customers can contact you
For a local business, location information is especially important.
If your business operates in Abuja, for example, your website should naturally communicate that you serve Abuja and the relevant areas you actually operate in.
This helps create a more consistent online presence.
7. Your business information needs to be consistent
Check how your business information appears across the internet.
Is the business name consistent?
Is the phone number correct?
Is the website correct?
Is the address correct?
If your business information is different across directories, social media profiles and websites, it can create unnecessary confusion.
Take some time to check your major online listings and correct outdated information.
8. You may be targeting keywords that are too broad
This is a big one.
A business might want to rank for something extremely broad like:
“Digital marketing agency”
But a customer might search for:
“digital marketing agency in Abuja”
Or:
“SEO agency Abuja”
Or:
“Google Business Profile optimization Abuja”
Local businesses need to think about the actual searches their customers are likely to make.
Instead of trying to rank for everything, focus on the services you actually provide and the locations you actually serve.
That gives your SEO strategy a much clearer direction.
9. Your competitors may simply have stronger local SEO
Sometimes your profile is not technically broken.
The problem is that other businesses competing for the same searches have built a stronger local presence.
They may have:
- More genuine reviews
- Better optimized profiles
- More relevant services
- Better websites
- Stronger local signals
- More established online presence
- Better content
- More mentions across relevant websites
This is why local SEO isn’t just about creating a Google Business Profile and waiting for customers to find you.
You need to understand what is happening around your business as well.
10. Don’t expect instant results
One of the biggest mistakes businesses make with SEO is expecting immediate results.
You make some changes today and check Google tomorrow.
Nothing happens.
Then you assume SEO doesn’t work.
Local SEO takes time.
Google needs to understand your business, compare it with other businesses and determine which businesses are most relevant for different searches.
That means SEO should be treated as an ongoing process rather than a one-time setup.
So, what should you do if your business isn’t showing on Google Maps?
Start with an audit.
Look at your Google Business Profile and ask:
Is the business information complete?
Is the primary category correct?
Are the services properly listed?
Is the business description clear?
Are the phone number, website and location correct?
Do you have genuine customer reviews?
Are you responding to those reviews?
Does your website clearly support what your Google Business Profile says?
Are your other online listings consistent?
Are you targeting the right local searches?
These are the areas I would look at before simply creating another profile or changing things randomly.
Your Google Business Profile is not just an online directory listing
For many local businesses, Google is one of the first places potential customers go when they’re ready to buy.
Someone might search for a restaurant near them.
A person might search for a hotel in Abuja.
Someone might search for a mechanic nearby.
A company might search for an SEO agency.
A customer might search for a spa offering massage services.
The businesses that appear prominently during these searches have an opportunity to get in front of people who already have an intention to buy.
That’s why local SEO matters.
The goal isn’t simply to make your business “look good” online.
The goal is to make it easier for the right customers to discover your business when they’re searching for what you offer.
