SEO Case Study: How We Improved a Local Business Ranking from #114 to #16
SEO is not something you should judge by promises alone.
If you want to know whether SEO work is actually making a difference, you need to look at the data.
That is why we decided to share one of our recent SEO results from a local business in Abuja.
This case study shows what happened to the business’s tracked Google rankings after we began optimizing its online presence. The result was an early but significant improvement, with the overall tracked ranking moving from #114 to #16 during the first week-plus of optimization.
These are real tracking results, not estimated numbers.
Where the Business Started
Before we started the optimization work, the business was struggling to gain visibility for several of the search terms being tracked.
The initial tracking showed an overall ranking position of #114.
Some of the individual keywords were also sitting far down the search results, making it difficult for potential customers searching for relevant services to find the business.
This is a common situation for local businesses.
A business can offer a good service and still receive very little search traffic if its online presence is not properly optimized.
That was the starting point for this SEO case study.
Before optimization: the tracked ranking was #114.

What We Focused On
The goal was not simply to make the website appear for one keyword.
The bigger goal was to improve the business’s overall visibility for relevant searches and make it easier for potential customers to find the business online.
Our optimization work focused on improving the business’s search visibility and strengthening the areas that could influence its local search performance.
Rather than looking at SEO as a one-time task, we treated it as an ongoing process that needs to be measured and adjusted based on actual results.
This is especially important for local businesses because the searches that matter are often highly specific.
Someone searching for a service in Abuja, for example, is much closer to becoming a customer than someone making a general search with no location or service intent.
The Result: From #114 to #16
After the first week-plus of optimization, the tracking data showed a major improvement.
The overall tracked ranking moved from:
#114 → #16
That is an improvement of 98 positions.
But the overall ranking was not the only thing that changed.
Several of the individual keywords we were tracking also moved significantly.
For example:
| Keyword | Tracked Ranking |
|---|---|
| Home service massage | #2 |
| Mobile massage | #2 |
| Massage | #7 |
| Massage spa | #6 |
| Body massage | #10 |
| Massage therapist Abuja | #13 |
| Nuru massage | #16 |
| Spa in Abuja | #18 |
| Massage service | #21 |
| Therapeutic | #72 |
The important thing here is that the business was no longer sitting deep in the search results for several of these terms.
Some keywords had already reached the top 10, while others moved into the top 20.
After the first week-plus of optimization: the tracked ranking improved to #16, with several individual keywords reaching the top 10.

Before vs. After
Looking at the tracking data side by side makes the change easier to understand.
| Measurement | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Overall tracked ranking | #114 | #16 |
| Home service massage | #113 | #2 |
| Massage spa | #165 | #6 |
| Body massage | #149 | #10 |
| Massage | #165 | #7 |
| Mobile massage | #128 | #2 |
| Massage therapist Abuja | #125 | #13 |
| Spa in Abuja | #67 | #18 |
The numbers show that the improvement was not limited to one search term.
Multiple tracked keywords moved at the same time, including several that reached the first page.
That is a much more useful signal than looking at one keyword in isolation.
What Do These SEO Results Actually Mean?
Seeing a ranking move from #114 to #16 in a relatively short period is encouraging, but it is important to understand what the result does and does not mean.
It does not mean that the business is permanently guaranteed a #16 position.
Google rankings can change.
Google also explains that local search results are influenced by factors such as relevance, distance, and prominence, which is why local rankings can change over time.
They can also vary depending on factors such as the searcher’s location, device, competition, and changes to Google’s search results.
The result simply shows what our tracking data recorded during this period.
And that is exactly why SEO tracking is important.
Instead of saying, “We think your rankings are improving,” you can look at the data and see what is actually happening.
Why Tracking Matters in SEO
One of the biggest mistakes businesses make with SEO is judging progress only by website traffic or by occasionally searching for their own business on Google.
That does not give you the complete picture.
A proper SEO process should track relevant keywords over time.
For a local business, this can include searches related to:
- The main service
- Specific services
- Location-based searches
- Service + location searches
- Commercial searches from potential customers
The purpose is not to chase hundreds of keywords.
It is to understand whether the business is becoming more visible for the searches that actually matter.
That is what we are doing with this campaign.
What We Are Watching Next
The first week-plus has produced a promising movement, but SEO does not stop after the first improvement.
The next stage is to continue monitoring the rankings and see whether these positions remain stable.
We also want to see how the improvement develops over time.
The areas worth watching include:
Keyword rankings:
Are the improved positions maintained or do they fluctuate?
Search visibility:
Is the business appearing for more relevant searches?
Website traffic:
Are more people reaching the website from search?
Customer actions:
Are people calling, messaging, requesting directions, or visiting the website?
Local search performance:
Does the business continue gaining visibility for relevant searches in its target location?
These measurements give a better understanding of whether improved rankings are turning into real business opportunities.
SEO Is a Process, Not a One-Time Fix
One early improvement can be exciting, but the real goal of SEO is long-term growth.
Search rankings change constantly.
Competitors make changes to their websites. Businesses create new content. Google updates how it displays and ranks information.
That means businesses need to keep improving and monitoring their online presence rather than assuming that one good ranking will last forever.
For this reason, we see this result as an early milestone, not the finish line.
The next objective is to build on the progress and improve visibility across more relevant searches.
What Local Businesses Can Learn From This
There are a few simple lessons from this SEO case study.
If you’re working on your local visibility, our guide to Google Business Profile optimization explains the important steps businesses can take to improve their presence in local search.
1. Measure SEO instead of guessing
Without tracking, it is difficult to know whether your optimization efforts are working.
2. Focus on relevant searches
Ranking for a keyword is only useful if that keyword is relevant to what the business actually offers.
3. Local SEO can make a difference
For businesses serving a specific city or area, being visible when people search for services nearby can be extremely valuable.
4. Look at more than one keyword
A business’s search performance should not be judged by a single ranking.
In this case, several tracked keywords improved at the same time.
5. Keep working after the first improvement
An early ranking increase is a good sign, but maintaining and building that visibility requires continued optimization and monitoring.
Final Thoughts
This SEO case study is a good example of why we believe SEO should be based on real data rather than assumptions.
The business started with an overall tracked ranking of #114.
After the first week-plus of optimization, that ranking had moved to #16, while several individual keywords had reached the first page of Google.
It is still early in the campaign, so we will continue monitoring the results and looking for opportunities to improve the business’s visibility further.
For us, the important part is not simply showing a ranking number.
It is understanding why the visibility is changing, which searches are improving, and whether that increased visibility eventually brings more potential customers to the business.
That is what makes SEO measurable.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to see SEO results?
There is no fixed timeframe for SEO results. Some businesses can see early movement relatively quickly, while stronger and more stable results usually require ongoing optimization and monitoring.
Can Google rankings change after improving?
Yes. Rankings can move up or down over time because search results are constantly changing and competition also changes.
Is ranking for one keyword enough?
No. A business should ideally be visible for multiple relevant searches that potential customers actually use.
Why is local SEO important for businesses in Nigeria?
Local SEO helps businesses become more visible to people searching for relevant products or services in their target locations. For businesses serving specific cities such as Abuja, this can be particularly valuable.
